Rejecting Passivity: Why Entrepreneurs Need a Purposeful Community
Church service today was so confirming I had to share my notes with you. I’ve been waiting to host a small community of kingdom-honoring entrepreneurs and I just felt today was the day to start.
There’s a difference between living and simply breathing to death.
Lecrae’s lyrics sum it up best:
"Help me, Lord, before there's no time left.
I ain't living; I'm just breathing to death..."
Many entrepreneurs feel this way—stuck in a cycle of busyness without progress, action without direction. But what if the issue isn’t your work ethic, intelligence, or even resources, but the environment you’re in?
The Bible warns us against passivity and calls us to live intentionally, purposefully, and in community. Science backs this up. Research from Northwestern University found that simply sitting near high performers can increase productivity, while proximity to low performers can drag you down.
So, as a faith-driven entrepreneur, you must ask yourself:
Who am I surrounding myself with? Are they sharpening me or stunting my growth?
Passivity is the Silent Killer of Potential
Many people assume that failure is their biggest enemy. But often, passivity is more dangerous than failure.
John 10:10 tells us:
"The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life."
Notice that Jesus contrasts destruction with abundance. But the enemy doesn’t always have to destroy you—sometimes, all he has to do is keep you passive. He’ll fill your time with distractions, doubts, and delays so you never step into your calling.
Passivity manifests in many ways:
In Your Time: Scrolling endlessly, waiting for "the right moment" to start that project God put on your heart.
In Your Work: Treating your business as a job instead of an assignment from God.
In Your Relationships: Keeping company with people who keep you comfortable instead of those who challenge you to grow.
If you’ve ever felt stuck in cycles of inaction, indecision, or complacency, you may be battling passivity. And like a slow leak in a tire, passivity won’t feel urgent at first, but it will eventually leave you stranded.
Your Environment Shapes Your Success
The Bible has long taught that who we surround ourselves with determines our destiny.
Proverbs 13:20 says:
"He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed."
This verse is a clear warning: Your associations shape your future.
"He who walks with wise men will be wise": Good companions bring wisdom, insight, and growth. When you intentionally surround yourself with people who are disciplined, faith-filled, and purpose-driven, their habits and mindset begin to rub off on you.
"The companion of fools will be destroyed": It’s not just that fools make bad choices—it’s that their choices impact those around them. If you stay in circles of negativity, complacency, or mediocrity, you will eventually absorb their mindset and suffer their fate.
This isn’t just spiritual wisdom—it’s scientifically proven.
With this passage of scripture my mind immediately went to a study from Northwestern University found that employees who sat near high performers improved their own effectiveness by 16%. Meanwhile, those surrounded by low performers saw their productivity drop by 30%. Even toxic employees had an immediate negative impact on those around them.
The lesson is clear: Who you walk with determines where you go. The company you keep isn’t just a reflection of who you are—it’s a prophecy of who you’re becoming.
Just like a plant’s growth depends on the soil it’s rooted in, your success depends on the people you allow to influence you.
If you want to grow in wisdom, surround yourself with wise people.
If you want to succeed in business, surround yourself with successful entrepreneurs.
If you want to strengthen your faith, surround yourself with faith-filled believers.
You Can’t Build Alone
Hebrews 12:1-2 gives us a powerful framework for success:
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
This passage reminds us of three essential truths:
You need the right community ("great cloud of witnesses") – You are not meant to run this race alone. Surrounding yourself with people who inspire, challenge, and strengthen you is essential.
You must actively remove distractions ("throw off everything that hinders") – Passivity is one of the greatest hindrances to purpose. It doesn’t always look like sin—it often looks like endless planning without execution.
You must stay focused on your goal ("fixing our eyes on Jesus") – When we anchor our businesses and lives in Christ, we find both clarity and endurance for the journey.
You can have all the talent, resources, and strategy in the world—but if you’re in the wrong environment, you will stay stuck.
